A root canal is a treatment of the infected, inflamed or dead tooth or the pulp of the tooth. The pulp contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. The inflammation or infection may be caused by deep decay, trauma or a crack in the tooth.
When a tooth is treated with a root canal, the diseased nerve is removed and the tooth is filled to prevent bacteria from entering. A crown is then placed as a final dental restoration.
